The term "Registered Dietitian" indicates that the individual has completed a bachelor's degree in the field of Nutrition, followed by completing an accredited internship and successfully passing the national exam. The credential of a Licensed Dietitian (LD) is granted by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure & Supervision. The true nutrition expert then is a dietitian and he/she will have the credentials of RD/LD behind their name.

Sloan is also highly qualified in sports dietetics, and was the first Oklahoman to have received her Board Certification as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). This credential is the premier professional sports nutrition credential in the U.S. CSSDs are Registered Dietitians who provide safe, effective, evidence-based nutrition services for health, fitness, and athletic performance.

A nutritionist is used often to describe someone with an interest or background in nutrition. Many people employ the title “nutritionist” when they really mean dietitian. Often that’s because the popular perception of a dietitian is someone who will impose a “diet” restricting their favorite foods and caloric intake. On the contrary, dietitians are very attentive to their client’s personal nutritional needs, offering healthy alternatives and options instead of a “one size fits all” approach.

Dietitians educated in Medical Nutrition Therapy will tailor meal plans according to the client’s allergies and medical diagnosis. Unfortunately, Oklahoma does not regulate the term “nutritionist”, so anyone can claim the credential without a license, despite the absence of a formal education or training. When you seek nutritional counseling, be sure to inquire about the education and credentials to be sure you are getting the most professional service for your money.
